Shishmaref, Alaska: eroding city

Map of Shishmaref, Alaska

Surrounded by the Bering Land Bridge National Reserve, Shishmaref is an Alaskan city with a population of 562. The city is said to be “the most extreme example of global warming on our planet,” as warming temperatures are melting the permafrost it sits on and the sea ice protecting it from harsh waves. The area has a recorded human history of over 2,000 years. Deanna Kingston, Ph.D., anthropology professor at Oregon State University, is studying the village and helping with its decision to relocate.

The photos and map accompanies a story about the university’s impact on public policy, written by Candice Ruud for The Daily Barometer, detailing Kingston’s efforts.
